Non-malignant pleural disease due to asbestos exposure

Asbestos-related pleural disease is the most common manifestation of asbestos exposure.  There are several forms of non-malignant asbestos-related pleural disease, namely:

  1. Pleural plaques
  2. Diffuse pleural thickening
  3. Benign asbestos-related pleural effusion
  4. Rounded atelectasis (synonyms: folded lung, Blesovsky's syndrome)

Pleural disease is generally better visualised with computed tomography (CT) than a standard chest X-ray.
